License Information For Electricians

New Hampshire contractor license State Electrical Board offers two licenses for electricians; the master electrician license and the journeyman.

Both licenses require a specific amount of training and education.

They are good for three years and require continuing education credits to renew. Both also require successful completion of an examination.

The New Hampshire master electrician license can be sought if you have at least 8000 hours worth of supervised practical experience and also have 576 hours of electrical schooling or at least an associate degree or better in an electrical field of study.

In lieu of higher education you can apply for the master electrician license if you have ten years of experience as a journeyman or a master electrician licensed elsewhere. In addition, you can apply for the master electrician examination if you pass the journeyman examination first and obtain 2000 hours of electrical installations before taking the master exam.

The New Hampshire master electrician exam is administered by the State Electrical Board and is based on the 2008 National Electrical Code. The test has 50 questions about the National Electrical Code, 50 questions about practical electrical installations, and 25 questions on the electrical board's administrative rules and RSA 319-C. A passing grade is a score of 70% or better.

The exams are given at the state fire academy during January, April, July, and October of each year. The exam fee is $50.

The cost of a New Hampshire master electrician license is $75 and has to be renewed every three years according to a schedule determined by your birth month. Fifteen continuing education credits are required for renewal. The master electrician license has reciprocity with Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.

The New Hampshire journeyman electrician license requires 8000 hours of practical experience along with 576 hours of formal training or an associate degree or better. Schooling can account for one year of required experience. This test is also based upon the 2008 National Electrical Code and requires a passing grade of at least 70%. The test also covers topics from RSA 319-C and the American Electricians Handbook.

The New Hampshire contractor license for journeyman costs $50 and the license costs $30. The New Hampshire contractorlicense needs to be renewed every three years according to when your birth month falls into the schedule. Fifteen continuing education hours are needed to renew that are based on the 2008 National Electrical Code and RSA 319-C. This license has reciprocity with several states: Arkansas, Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Utah.
