An Electrician Apprenticeship Gives Your Career A Head Start

The start and end dates for training are flexible but academic training begins at set times since classroom instruction is done through Carnegie College in Rosyth.

In fact, during the first year of training, you will spend 26 weeks fulltime in classroom studies and the remainder of the time engaged in work based learning with your employer. An important part of an electrician apprenticeship is on the job training where you learn new skills by actually doing them under the direct supervision of a skilled electrician.

However, a great deal of training takes place in the classroom setting, so to ensure success, it helps if you are academically inclined. Ideally you should have at least three Level 3 Standard Grades in science, math, and English. In addition, you should have manual dexterity and a knack for problem solving to be a success as an electrician.

Some of the classes required for your training include Working Safely, Using Technical Information, Electrical/Electronic CAD Drawing, Wiring Electrical Equipment, Assembly of Circuits, Maintaining Electrical Systems, Electrical Principles, Applied Mathematics, Assembly of Components, Switch Gear and Protection, Support Systems, Power Factor Correction, Electromagnetics, Electrostatics, and Electrical Motors.

Your academic and workplace training will qualify you for SVQ and NVQ Level 1/2/3 and SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation. You can also customize the Scotland apprenticeships program to qualify you for HNC in four years, and to include any other aspect of production, leadership, or maintenance as it relates to electrical engineering.

The Scotland apprenticeship program is administered by Skills Development Scotland. Your education is a result of co-operation between them and your sponsoring employer. There is no cost for training since it is paid for by Skills Development Scotland. This allows you to learn a valuable trade without having to go deeply into debt like you might have to with traditional college.

You must be employed by a sponsor to begin an electrician apprenticeship, so you are paid to learn from day one. In addition to the financial incentives to the Scotland apprenticeships, you will also have the security of knowing your training is being overseen by a governing body so you develop the skills you need to meet nationally recognized qualification.

The first step in becoming an electrician apprentice is to find an employer to sponsor you. This is done by following the same procedures you would when job hunting. Employers post jobs for apprentice electricians in the same places they post other jobs. You may want to search at a local Careers Scotland Centre, Jobcentre Plus, employment agency, online, or local newspapers.

Remember, there is competition for Scotland apprenticeships, so you will need a well developed resume that shows you in a favorable light. You may want to brush up on job interview skills as well so you have the best chance possible for getting hired for an electrician apprenticeship.

Once you are hired, you and your employer will work with Skills Development Scotland to file the required paperwork and begin your training lessons. While undergoing on the job training, you will function like any other usual employee and must adhere to the policies set forth by your employer. Your employer has responsibilities as well in the Scotland apprenticeships program. He must give you days off to attend classroom studies, supply a qualified electrician to supervisor your work, provide a safe working environment, and enable your success with the program.

Upon successful completion of your electrician apprenticeship, you will be awarded with national qualifications that allow you to practice your trade in any location you choose. Scotland apprenticeships give you the opportunity to earn a wage and support yourself while you gain job skills that will benefit you throughout your life. When you finish training, you won't be left with a pile of debt. Instead you will have four years of work experience behind you and a head start on a well-paying and satisfying career.
